Last week, Home Instead Senior Care of Richmond sponsored a Wii Bowling Tournament at The Verena. There were prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. A fun time was had by all!!!

Verena’s residents are very serious about their Wii bowling, for sure. A bit competitive! But they all cheered each other on and it was a great event.

"An upcoming fundraiser will combine blackjack, cornhole and a Wii bowling competition, and may send someone home with an extra $1,000. The Rotary Gaming Night Fundraiser raises money for scholarships and community beautification projects sponsored by the Rotary Club of Grove City."

Maxine Phipps will celebrate her 90th birthday Monday. Living in Marblehead for 10 years, Maxine frequents the Danbury Senior Center. She has been going daily for six years and can be found having lunch with her friends and maybe playing some cards. Recently, she joined the Wii Bowling Tournament at the senior center.

I just spent an hour watching 12 people over the age of 70 compete in a Wii Bowling Tournament at our local retirement community, and I think I love that idea more than anything I’ve run into in the last, say, 15 minutes.

Members of the senior centers in Blaine and Ham Lake the morning of Feb. 10 competed against each other in a Nintendo Wii bowling tournament at the Ham Lake Senior Center.

Many of the 16 senior citizens that participated had played the game before at either their senior center or at a relative’s home.

“It’s wonderful for seniors. It gets them moving and get their blood flowing,” said Rhona Marie, who attends the Blaine Senior Center, but lives in Ham Lake.

…A unique twist to this Wii tournament, that was the brainchild of Meyer, was a bowler would get a card for each strike or spare. Once they collected more than five cards, they would discard a card to keep a five-card hand. The bowlers with the best poker hands won prizes.

“Seniors strike up fun with Wii bowling”:Bob Hoyrup of Westland, who bowled a 279 that day, used to play senior softball and volleyball. “I had prostate and colon cancer, and three operations, and this is all I can do,” Hoyrup said. “I did bowl years ago. The exercise isn’t quite there (in Wii bowling) but it does take skill. Consistency is the name of the game. It’s a lot of fun.”
